Here is Cathy just after we arrived at the Anchorage Airport waiting to rendezvous with our Princess Cruise representative.

We are now on the coach bus taking us from the Anchorage Airport to our embarkation port of Whittier, Alaska, about a 1.5 hour ride. This is a huge cargo plane, called the "Dream Lifter", (as seen through the bus window) parked at one of the terminals.

As we travel South on the Seward Highway, we get a glimpse of the beautiful Alaskan landscape (as seen through the bus window) and the Chugach Mountain Range - just a hint of what we would be seeing on the cruise. The overcast clouds were a precursor of what we see on most days of the cruise.

Some more beautiful mountain scenery as seen through the bus window on our way from Anchorage to Whittier.
12_2008-0915-1734-45.jpg
Looking through the bus window out over the railroad tracks and mud flats, caused by the low tide of the southern arm of Chickaloon Bay, to the mountain views of the Chugach Mountain Range.
13_2008-0915-1736-32.jpg
A mountain scene very reminiscent of back home in Colorado (except for the mud flats).
14_2008-0915-1736-03.jpg
YES! We are in Alaska. I could not resist a picture of the "Alaska Special" freight train.
15_2008-0915-1737-13.jpg
Almost looks like Pikes Peak (are we home sick already??).
16_2008-0915-1737-35A.jpg
Again, the mud flats of Chickaloon Bay, Chugach Mountains, and clouds.

Another gorgeous mountain scene of the Chugach Mountain Range.

A view of the Chugach Mountain Range and a hint of Alpine Glaciers in the cirques of the mountains as we are about to go around a curve at the peninsula.

More mountain views as we ride south towards Whittier.

Here is a closer view, and you can see the snow and Alpine Glaciers in the mountains.

A view across the southern arm of Chickaloon Bay to the Chugach Mountains.

The administration building and visitors center for the Portage-Whittier Tunnel which we will drive through to get to Whittier.

The entrance to the second portion of the 3-mile long Portage-Whittier Tunnel. This was originally a railroad tunnel through a solid granite mountain. So, it is quite narrow.
